Panicos Spanos discovered the capabilities of metal as an effective means of artistic expression from a very young age.
Under the instruction of the prolific Cypriot artist Pambos Michlis, Spanos experimented with different artistic forms such as classical painting and ceramics. However, his love for metal remained a constant. Drawing from his knowledge of sculpting techniques and anatomical rules, Spanos soon launched his own practice as a metal sculptor.
His large-scale sculptures never cease to amaze, not only for their dimensions but also for their imposing presence. Spanos explores the human body by creating figures in motion, severed limbs and heads. His signature is his virtuosic interplay between the inherent heaviness of metal and the emotional tenderness of his subjects. In essence, Spanos’s work communicates what one would call “a powerful fragility”.
